Construction company Morgan Ashurst, which has a regional office in Leeds, has hired two 17m machines and one 25m rotational telehandler for this project.
"We are proud that our strong track record in building for the public sector, particularly in education, has helped us to win this significant contract for the University of Leeds," said Chris Brown, Morgan Ashurst area director for Leeds. "We hope students and lecturers enjoy watching the buildings take shape."
Morgan Ashurst will build two half-hexagon-shaped student accommodation blocks - one eight storeys and the other six storeys high - in Mount Preston Street, Leeds. The buildings, to be known as Charles Morris Halls, will be situated around a courtyard garden. Together, they will accommodate over 450 en-suite bedrooms. As part of the project, Morgan Ashurst will demolish the former student accommodation building, Mary Ogilvie House, which dates back to the 1960s and is no longer fit for purpose, to make way for the development.

Designed by Morgan Ashurst - Design & Build and Architects Sheppard Robson, the building is set to be complete in June 2010, setting the benchmark by which University Campus accommodation in the UK will be measured. It will be located at the heart of the University campus, as shown by the light blue arrow below.
